EDF Energies Nouvelles enters the Polish market

EDF Energies Nouvelles has continued its international business expansion by making two acquisitions in Poland: the development company Starke Wind and the 48MW Linowo wind project. EDF Energies Nouvelles has also created a local subsidiary, EDF EN Polska, which will drive its development in the country.
These two purchases have been concluded in an economic and regulatory environment in Poland that favours the development of renewable energies, as the country has set a target of having 6 GW of wind capacity by 2020, up from 1.6 GW at the end of 2011. The country also has very good wind conditions, and is working on improvements to provide investors with better long-term perspectives.

The acquisition of Starke Wind – a Polish development company – enable EDF Energies Nouvelles’ set-up in the country, through an experienced local team and a promising portfolio of wind projects totalling around 650 MW. Construction of two of these projects, 58MW and 28MW respectively, could begin in 2013, and other projects with total capacity of around 150MW are at an advanced development stage. Starke Wind’s founder and development teams will remain present to ensure the handover. In line with EDF Energies Nouvelles’ policy for new markets, the acquisition price includes a significant goodwill component related to the approval of all needed authorization and to the commissioning of the most advanced projects.

The acquisition of the Linowo wind project also gives EDF Energies Nouvelles the opportunity to quickly hold operational assets. Located in the Grudziadz region in Northern Poland, this project is already under construction. Equipped with 24 Vestas turbines, the wind farm is scheduled to be brought into service in late 2012.

As a result of these developments, EDF Energies Nouvelles has set up EDF EN Polska, a wholly owned subsidiary located in Warsaw, which will group together all of EDF Energies Nouvelles’ Polish assets and handle business development in Poland. These operations complement the EDF group activities in Polska, where it is operating for 14 years through EDF Polska, which is notably the leader of power generation from biomass.

“These two acquisitions are an excellent opportunity for EDF Energies Nouvelles to quickly establish a solid position in Poland, a key country for the EDF group, which has strong growth potential and where EDF EN is aiming to become a major player in wind energy,” explained Fabienne Demol, Executive Vice-President, New Business Development at EDF Energies Nouvelles.
