EDF Energies Nouvelles increases its investment in Texas

  • Wind

EDF Renewable Energy, the US subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles, has exercised its option to acquire the remaining 49% interest in a 161 MW wind farm project from Cielo Wind Power, LP. EDF Renewable Energy now has full ownership of the Spinning Spur II project in Texas.

The Spinning Spur II facility, which will be comprised of 87 General Electric wind turbines each with 1.85 MW in unit capacity, is located on a site of over 16 hectares in Oldham County. Construction is due to begin in June 2013, with commissioning slated for summer 2014.

Spinning Spur II will be one of the first projects to take advantage of the new CREZ (Competitive Renewable Energy Zones) transmission lines connecting the wind generating capacity of the Texas Panhandle, to high electricity demand areas in the state.

The electricity generated will be sold at a fixed rate for the first 10 years of the project’s life.

The renewal of the Production Tax Credit granted to wind farms commissioned or entering the construction phase in 2013 has paved the way for partnerships with developers such as Cielo Wind Power and given the EDF Energies Nouvelles group an opportunity to strengthen its presence in promising regions with high-quality wind resources, such as Texas.

Following on from the Spinning Spur I (161 MW) and Bobcat Bluff (150 MW) projects commissioned in December 2012, the Spinning Spur II project will be EDF Energies Nouvelles’ third project in Texas, eventually boosting the Group’s gross or installed capacity in the US state to 472 MW.
