Wind at sea

Welcome > Our solutions > Offshore wind

Our ambition: to develop, build and operate value-creating offshore wind projects for the territories.

Why offshore wind turbines?

Offshore wind power represents a strong link in the energy transition. By capturing powerful and regular sea winds, the installation of wind turbines several kilometers off the coast makes it possible to produce abundant low-carbon energy, contributing significantly to the electrification of uses and energy sovereignty.

Widely deployed in Northern Europe for more than 20 years, offshore wind power is today a mature and competitive technology. Its rapid development throughout the world has allowed production costs to be divided by 2.5 from 2010 to 2021.

Europe is a leader in the offshore wind sector, offering an opportunity for French industry to contribute to its development. According to the Sea Energy Observatory, the offshore wind industry could create up to 20,000 direct jobs in France by 2030.

Did you know that a 500 MW offshore wind farm (around 70 wind turbines) could produce the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 700,000 people?

Our ambition in offshore wind power

A recognized player in renewable energies, the group EDF has been deploying expertise in offshore wind power for more than ten years through projects in development, construction and operation. With more than 500 people dedicated to these activities, the group EDF is the leader in this energy in France, and develops projects in areas with high potential such as North America and Asia.

FOCUS

Floating offshore wind power

Floating offshore wind power is a future solution to expand the scope of installation of offshore wind turbines. It allows parks to be installed in areas where the depth is too great for the installation of laid foundations. Located 17 km off the coast of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, in an area where the water depth exceeds 100 meters, our Provence Grand Large project is the first pilot park for floating offshore wind turbines in France.

Build our projects with local stakeholders

If it seems to be an immense space of freedom, the sea is the place of many human activities, and shelters marine biodiversity to be protected.

Each of our projects is based on several years oftechnical and environmental studies, conducted by independent scientists. Environmental monitoring is ensured throughout the life of the project.

We also develop our projects following the principle of coexistence of uses, in order to create the best conditions for the continuation of the activities of professional fishing.
